The 498 Marine Combat knife is the chosen knife of the United State Marine Forces... for good reason. One of the most popular of the Ontario knives, the 498 Marine Combat Knife measures 12" in overall length and has a 7" clip point blade that is made of rugged and reliable 1095 carbon steel, with a Zinc Phosphate finish and is .165" thick. The handle is 5" long, and is weather proofed leather (great for field use), and features a Steel buttcap. Comes complete with a black leather sheath.

Bought this because it's the real deal. It's a tool and meant to be used. I plan to actually put this thing to work. I refused to pay almost twice as much for another brand just because their knife would look pretty on my shelf and make for a great conversation piece. Ontario makes serious knives.
While I don't actually use the knife for combat (I live in a rather peaceful place here ;) this knife is best on so many levels. It's rugged and can take abuse. It is the best overall value for the money and it balances really well in your hand. You can use it for batoning (I really only tried that once though and was able to chop through wood easily) and carving as it comes quite sharp from the manufacturer. The sharp swedge I won't need - but the blade is so long it will still work for batoning. Plus, you can use the 90-degree edge on the rest of the blade for fire starting.
Granted, the Ka Bar is fancy (I own that one too) and it sure may come out of the box cleaner and more refined. But it is the rough-around-the-edges Ontario 498 that does it for me. Will use it every day though not as an EDC in California. Put it to work in the garage or in the backyard. Give it a little TLC and it will outlive your grandkids even.

Another great knife from Ontario, these people know how to make a knife, beautifully balanced and lays in your hand perfectly. Holds a good edge, surprisingly light for the size and for whatever reason simply feels good in your hand. Great price!
